Sir Ian Carruthers is Chair of 2020 Delivery. In his 43 year NHS career, Sir Ian has transformed access to healthcare as well as the quality of services and financial performance in both national and local settings. He has overseen many major service changes and is a champion of change to deliver better outcomes for patients, staff and communities.

Sir Ian was previously Chief Executive of NHS South of England and Acting Chief Executive of the NHS. More recently he has undertaken a review of innovation in healthcare culminating in Chairing the Innovation Health and Wealth Board which forms part of the Government strategy for improving the spread of best practice in healthcare. He has published several papers on reviewing and improving the NHS.

Sir Ian is currently developing a portfolio of interests relating to healthcare and the public sector and is Chairman of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust; Chancellor of the University of the West of England; Chair of the Healthcare UK Governance Board; Chair of the IHW Implementation Board; Co-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia; Chair of NHS Supply Chain Customer Board; Non-Executive Director of Bioquell plc.; Non-Executive Director of OR International and acts as an independent advisor to NHS Chief Executives and NHS organisations.

Ian Carruthers received a Knighthood in the 2003 New Year’s Honours List, for services to the NHS.
