The D5 Methodology follows five stages:

  • Define– identify the performance challenges, link them to business needs
  • Discover– understand the current process or system and the performance gap or opportunity
  • Design– generate possible solutions to address the performance challenge
  • Deliver– pilot, iterate, implement and deliver improved performance
  • Digest– review progress, learnings and opportunities to share best practice

Problem Definition Sheets (PDS) distil the key information for your project down to one page: the problem the project must solve, outputs, success factors, stakeholders, scope, context & timing [template] [video]

Issue Trees break the problem down into independent issues and sub-issues, each defining a manageable chunk of work for the project team [template] [video]

Work Plans or “Boat Charts” gives you a one-page overview of key deliverables, activities and deadlines [template]

Hypothesis Trees grow insight from the start, based on the current evidence, and can then be used to guide your workplan and to test and iterate your solution [template] [video]

The 5 Whys help you pursue and eliminate the root cause of a performance gap, not just the symptom or effect, to drive sustainable improvement [video]

Issue Prioritisation Matrices identify the questions most likely to make a difference to the recommendation or solution, so you can invest your time efficiently [template]

The Influence Model summarises four drivers for behavioural change and helps you consider, from the perspective of each of your stakeholders: “I will change my behaviour if…” [video]
